After a wild year of tennis, Andy Murray and Serena Williams will return to Flushing Meadows with their sights set on defending their singles titles at the U.S. Open. Obviously, this will be no easy task, and after just watching an unpredictable Wimbledon play out, it is no guarantee that either of these fine champions will make a deep run into this tournament.
The men’s side is going to be loaded with possible fantastic matchups. We’ll see how these matches line up when the draw is announced on Aug. 22, but for now, we simply have to be content in the knowledge that there will be ample matches to sink our teeth into. It’s the year’s final major, and I expect this tournament to take the major season out with a bang. Take a look at some of the vitals, and then I’ll offer up a look at the men’s and women’s race to the title.

Men’s Singles
Entering this event last year, Andy Murray was simply hoping to win his first major. This year, he enters as not only the defending U.S. Open champ but also as the reigning Wimbledon championship.

Needless to say, it’s been an eventful year for Murray. And maybe the fatigue of it all is getting to him. He’s looked less than stellar in his run up to the U.S. Open, with an exit in the third round and the quarterfinals of his past two events.
However, I certainly won’t be surprised to see him reverse his recent play and make a nice run here. He will have plenty of competition to pull that off, however.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will be looking to add a second Grand Slam title to his 2013 resume.
He beat Murray in the final of the Australian Open earlier in the year, then lost to Rafael Nadal in the semifinals at the French Open and then lost in the final to Murray at Wimbledon. Like Murray, Nole does not enter this event with much momentum. He fell in the quarterfinals in his last event and in the semifinals in his event prior to that. Meanwhile, after missing last year’s U.S. Open due to injury, Nadal enters this event with far more momentum. He’s won his last two events and has an amazing 53-3 record in singles play this year. With these three powers questing to add another major title to their resume, this should be an entertaining tournament.
Women’s Singles
At 31, defending champion Serena Williams is turning in yet another marvelous season. She has won eight singles titles this season while compiling a 60-4 record.
Williams has always been comfortable on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. Her prodigious power is a nice advantage there, and she has four U.S. Open titles to her credit. She will be a strong contender to win a fifth this year. However, that is far from a slam dunk. In her last event, Williams fell to Victoria Azarenka in the final.

Other than the outcome, that result came in a match that was eerily reminiscent of last year’s U.S. Open final.
At Flushing Meadows last year, Williams beat Azarenka, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. In the final in Cincinnati, Azarenka beat Williams. 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (8).
